Identification Protocol (RFC 1413) server Rick Troth BMC ** ) Copyright 1995, Richard M. Troth, all rights reserved. This is the README file for Troth's IDENTD for VM/CMS. There are implementations of the TAP/IDENT protocol for many platforms, and there is at least one other for VM, that from Irelann Kerry Anderson <kerry@maine.edu> (who seems to be up to some serious VM coding). Most VM systems connected to the Internet should run some kind of IDENT server. It doesn't provide anything directly, but it lets remote servers of other protocols (like HTTP, TELNET, and such) to know who is on the other end of the connection from your VM host. IDENT is NOT an authentication protocol, but it *is* useful for logging, debugging, and even tracking down intruders. STRONG DISCLAIMER: I pulled my version of IDENTD about a year ago when someone told me that CMS NETSTAT can block your VM TCP/IP service virtual machine (the main TCP/IP v-machine), even if only for short periods. I have not received any reports of trouble from this code, but BE AWARE and let me know if you do experience something like that. Updates can most often be found at http://casita.houston.tx.us/~troth/software/identd.vmarc or http://ua1vm.ua.edu/~troth/software/identd.vmarc Enjoy! -- Rick Troth <troth@casita.houston.tx.us>, Houston, Texas, USA http://casita.houston.tx.us/~troth/
