The 1986 VM Workshop was held June 3 through 6 at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. It was attended by 181 systems programmers representing 136 organizations from the United States, Canada, and Europe.

This was the first Workshop for which a t-shirt was produced. They were light blue with the 3-D block VM on the front in dark blue and yellow and the bear, wearing a Workshop t-shirt, on the back. The 3-D block VM logo was hand-coded in Postscript in Xedit and the original art was produced by sending the Postscript code through RSCS to a 300 dpi Apple Laserwriter that was connected via a 7171 terminal controller.
